FACTS: HIV & AIDS

HIV causes AIDS, also known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, a condition in which the body's immune system is slowly but ultimately destroyed. According to the World Health Organization, HIV infection is a pandemic, a disease that is prevalent throughout a country, a continent, or even the whole world.

AIDS is the leading cause of death in Thailand, leaving over 380,000 orphaned children in its wake. Children are essentially being borned and abandoned:

  •  One child is orphaned by HIV/AIDS every 14 seconds.
  •  10-12% of infants with HIV will die in their first year.
  •  70% of children with AIDS die before the age of four.

Once the disease is acquired, no modern medicinal drug or treatment can reverse the untimely fate that is to come.

THE FIREFLY SYNDROME

Fireflies don't live long. They're born, they shine briefly, then they fade. Babies born with HIV don't live long, either. But if only there were enough people to love and care for them, their brief lives may still have the chance to shine, like the firefly, before they fade. - Anonymous
